WSAF 2026

Equus

this is a two hour play (including interval) which although longer than a normal submission would be a great unusual piece of theatre good for the student arts festival. We have an enthusiastic team of people prepared to put on a full length play to the high standard which is present across Warwick theatre societies. we have a director and assistant director who adore this play and will no doubt create an incredible adaptation of the play. we want to work in a self-sufficient way, creating our own advertising and organising the production in the way of any other show at the uni, however we are looking forward to engaging with the festival as a whole wanting to be embedded into the process and working well within the entire festival. our artistic intention for Equus is to explore its ambiguity and layered meanings, particularly the blurring of religion and sexuality, symbolised physically through movement and choreography. I want to use abstract staging and expressive puppetry to bring the horses to life and externalise Alan’s inner world, creating a sense of ritual and intensity. The production will embrace minimalism and symbolism to keep the focus on the psychological and emotional complexity, encouraging the audience to actively question and interpret rather than settle on a single explanation.
