“What is Folk Music? Workshop”

Folk music is hard to define - to do so is somewhat controversial due to the genre's rich and complex history. As part of our Science of Music Module and in collaboration with Warwick Folk Society, we wanted to explore, research and educate more people on this complexity. Over the course of approx. 90-120 min, we will travel down the twisting and diverging path that is the history of folk music, exploring interdisciplinary topics such as neuroscience, anthropology, sociology and, well, music. The workshop will have sections of presentation, discussion, and the chance to learn and play some folk songs and instruments! If you already play an instrument, feel free to bring it along, and if not, we will have plenty of instruments of different skill levels for you to pick from- and if you don't want to play, don't worry, as you can still engage in the discussion sections!
